Forbes Named NC State among the Best Online Master’s Programs for Military Service Members, Citing the University as the “Best Deal for North Carolina Residents”

NC State has been recognized by Forbes as one of the best online master’s programs for military service members, earning the distinction of “Best Deal for North Carolina Residents.”

In its 2026 ranking, Forbes highlighted NC State’s value for in-state students, noting its annual in-state graduate tuition and fees of $12,101. The ranking also cited NC State as the third-most affordable school on the list and noted that eligible military and veteran students pay in-state tuition. Forbes also recognized NC State’s 60 online master’s degree programs, Carnegie R1 research status and dedicated veterans education services office.

The recognition reflects NC State’s continued commitment to expanding access to rigorous, flexible graduate education for students balancing careers, military service, family responsibilities and other commitments. Through NC State Online, students learn from the same faculty who teach on campus, with programs designed to meet the needs of working professionals across North Carolina and beyond. The program offers more than 120 online and distance academic programs across fields including business, design, engineering and education.

Forbes evaluated online master’s programs using factors tied to affordability, credibility, student outcomes, student experience and the application process. Its ranking of best affordable online master’s programs reviewed more than 3,600 accredited, nonprofit colleges and universities.

NC State online and distance education programs are accredited at the same level as in-person degrees and are taught by NC State faculty, with technology and learning support designed for students completing coursework from a distance.
