Career goals

After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a bachelor’s degree in digital arts, Flores was looking forward to a career in graphic design. “I enjoyed the creativity of design – creating content that captures the attention of the audience. It wasn’t until I was exposed to marketing during an internship that I decided to change career paths, she says.

Now, she wants to build a career in the field. “In the future, I want to work as a marketing specialist or expert working in museums – building a bridge between marketing and art and further exposing art to a diverse audience. Marketing analytics will assist in this pursuit by combining these two determining factors, which is essential in expanding interest in art museums.”

Why Jenkins?

While trying to decide what path to explore as a master’s student, a social media post advertising the MMA program piqued Flores’s interest. “I wanted to find a program that explored a topic of marketing I wasn’t exposed to yet, so marketing analytics fit the bill. Plus, this program is amazing, super moldable to my busy life and I get to learn from professors who have experience in the career I want to be in.”

Daily life

Flores keeps busy working full-time at Eno Animal Hospital as a marketing assistant while also pursuing her MMA as a full-time student. “It can be a lot but I manage my time wisely. I work a traditional Monday through Friday schedule with the occasional extra work on the weekends in Durham. It’s not a bad commute, however, it can take a long time to get back home during rush hour,” she says. “To kill two birds with one stone, while waiting for the traffic to die down after work, I go to a brewery or coffee shop near my job to work on classwork or homework.”

What makes it great

Flores appreciates the quality of professors who bring different experiences from the marketing world. “All of them have some kind of experience in the field, so you’re able to ask questions and learn from people in the career field you wish to go into,” she says. “Plus I appreciate the flexibility of the program. Because everything is online and asynchronous, I can work on homework or lectures during my own time. Some professors do synchronous class meetings, which are always scheduled for when most of the class is available and you can chat with the professor and classmates.”

Career impact

While Flores didn’t come into the program with a formal education in marketing, she appreciates how the MMA program will allow her to sharpen her marketing strategies while also learning how data analysis intertwines with it. She believes these skills will not only help her in her current role but also position her well for future career opportunities.

Final thoughts

For individuals interested in pursuing an MMA, Flores offers the following advice. “Communication is super important, so let your professors know if you’re lost or confused. Make study groups with your classmates, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your teaching assistants – they’re all available for you!”
