Danielle Morrin: Pursuing a Passion in Sports
Halfway through her undergraduate degree in education, Danielle Morrin realized she wanted to work in sports.
As a swimmer from the age of four all the way through college, sports had always played a significant role in Morrin’s life. Since she was too far along in her undergraduate career to switch majors, she knew she’d plan to return to school for a master’s in a sport-related field.
That’s where the online Master of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Sport Management (PRTSM) program comes in.
“I looked long and hard for a program that I thought would truly teach me about the background of the sports industry. I applied for this program in the spring of 2018, and I haven’t looked back. I have truly enjoyed my classes, working with my professors, and meeting new friends,” says Morrin.
Morrin currently works for ECU Athletics as the assistant director of development for the Pirate Club. With a full-time job, Morrin looked for a program with flexibility and one that would give her ample knowledge about the sports industry.
While talking with a colleague, she learned of the online PRTSM program at NC State and the rest is history.
“This program has helped me make connections in an industry that is all about connections,” Morrin says.
After speaking with Professor Jason Boccaro about her interest in working in athletic administration, Boccaro set up a breakfast with former NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow.
“I got to pick her brain about being a female in athletic administration — it was awesome!” Morrin exclaims.
Morrin adds, “All professors that I encountered throughout the program were understanding, helpful and truly cared about you as an individual. I didn’t feel like a number, I felt each professor really tried to get to know me and help me as best as they could.”
Morrin’s advice for those looking to pursue a master’s in sport management?
“Do not be afraid to take time to look into different programs to find your right fit. It took me two and a half years after graduating undergrad to find a program that I would enjoy completing.”
Morrin adds, “I have learned a tremendous amount of content in this program that I am currently utilizing in my job. The professors made sure their classes were applicable to the industry and assigned assignments that were practical and realistic.”
After 3 1/2 years in the program, Morrin is proud of her achievements and will take all of the lessons she’s learned into her future career and beyond.
“I established a great group of friends, felt a part of the Wolfpack community, and took classes from professors who cared,” says Morrin.
