The Learning, Design, and Technology program addresses a growing field in learning, technology, design and development, media, as well as human performance, and provides a multidisciplinary area of study that draws students from many backgrounds. The program will help you gain the skills to design, develop, implement, and evaluate learning and instruction in a variety of settings, including PK-12, higher education, military, nonprofit and corporate learning environments.

The Learning, Design, and Technology program at NC State offers two different degree programs:

  • The Master of Science degree is for students interested in instructional design, instructional development, educational media (video and media production), online learning design and development, and curriculum development.
  • The Master of Education degree is for current teachers interested in technology in the K-12 classroom, technology facilitation, and for those interested in becoming technology coordinators and facilitators in public K-12 schools. The M.Ed. degree can lead to 077 or 079 endorsements on a North Carolina teaching license.

Eligibility

Applicants must submit:

  • Two official* copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts, including any non-degree studies (NDS) at NC State.
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA on all undergraduate work for unconditional admission. We may provisionally accept other applicants given professional experience or other high quality application materials.
  • Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with applicant’s work.
  • A 500-800 word professional statement describing professional goals and indicating which strand or emphasis area will be focused on.
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores for international applicants whose first language is not English.
  • Academic writing sample and statement of research interests (M.S. applicants only).

*Unofficial transcripts are accepted for application review purposes, but we require official ones before an admitted student can begin graduate studies.

Plan of Study

Choose between a Master of Education degree or Master of Science degree.

Capstone Requirements

Students in both Learning Design and Technology degree programs must complete required capstones prior to graduation. Students in both degree programs will be required to complete a capstone portfolio, as well as an internship or capstone project specific to their degree and career goals.

Career Prospects

Graduates of our M.S. degree program typically work as instructional designers, e-learning developers, educational media producers and developers, and educational video professionals in a variety of settings including higher education, government, not for profits, and private industry.

Graduates of our M.Ed. degree program typically work as technology specialists, technology coordinators, teachers who want to integrate more technology in their classrooms, and media specialists in K-12 schools. The M.Ed. degree can lead to 077 or 079 endorsements on a North Carolina teaching license.
