Partner With Our Students

The Center for Geospatial Analytics invites organizations to participate in the education mission of the Center and the College of Natural Resources.  Partnerships are sought to provide client-based, real-world learning experiences for students through structured projects, internships, and other avenues. Becoming a GIST learning partner means working with students to develop solutions in this collaborative problem solving effort, leveraging the expertise of each participant.

Elephants on the Line is a community-based conservation program for the Asian elephant population. Partners are using geospatial tools for citizen engagement and education with researchers, forest managers and citizens of the Bhutan-India Transboundary region.

Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition – Open Source application development to visualize the kind, distribution and frequency of published attacks on health workers over a specified time period.

Supports the Government of Kenya’s efforts to make dramatic changes to its health worker education and training systems through visual display and spatial decision support applications across the public and private sectors. Database development links location of training institutions, trained health care workers and professional licensure with the ability to analyze conditions in areas of greatest need.

Daily Precipitation of Hofmann Forest: Process automation to prepare data, run raster analysis for spatial and temporal agreement in precipitation amounts across the forest to compare rainfall estimates from a field gauge network with radar-based models.

Ecological Assessment of Historic Pinehurst #2 Golf Course after restoration to research best management practices for sustainable management of the turf grass and natural areas using native plant material.

Evaluating Routes for North Carolina’s Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) Highway

Gateway National Recreation Area– Develop web based management tool for staff to access information and communicate needs to other staff. Capabilities to edit data and add features (e.g. proposed trails), conduct simple analysis, query the park assets, view linked photo libraries and print maps directly from a desktop computer

Shenandoah National Park – “Exploring Park History-One Tract at a Time”, development of a web based interactive application that permits users to search historic land tract database to find former family properties within the park boundaries.

Valley Forge NHP– Interactive Trail Mapping and Terrain Analysis

Appalachian Trail– Development of planning tool in event of Wildland Fire impacting the trail corridor to permit communication about access to the varied jurisdictions responding to the event at the remote locations on both public and private lands.

Cape Cod National Seashore– suitability analysis to determine areas for prescribed fire activities; communicate results to park staff and public
