Electrical Engineering

Entrance Exam: GRE

The online Graduate Certificate Program in Electrical Engineering (EE) is designed for those who wish to increase their knowledge and skills in electrical engineering either for future career opportunities or in preparation for a graduate degree. This certificate provides the opportunity for students to take graduate courses without the commitment of undertaking a full master’s degree. Some electrical engineering master's programs will let you apply your certificate coursework to degree requirements.

Non-Degree Studies (NDS) Students

NDS students seeking spring enrollment in an Engineering online program and/or course, please submit your NDS application no later than Wednesday, January 4, 2023 to ensure your application materials are received on time.  Submitting your application after January 4, may result in not being admitted or enrolled in classes for the Spring 2023 semester.

Students must meet ONE of the following requirements for admission into the EE Graduate  Certificate Program:

  • Have a BS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering from a regionally accredited four-year  college or university, and have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale.
  • Have a BS degree in the sciences or engineering from a regionally accredited four-year college  or university with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale.
  • Be a degree-seeking student in good standing in an NC State University graduate program in  the sciences or engineering.

Plan of Study

The EE GCP requires a total of 12 credit hours of graduate-level Electrical Engineering courses  taken for a letter grade. There is no prescribed list of courses for the certificate; students may  take a combination of courses tailored to their interests and needs, subject to course  prerequisites.

Career Prospects

Electrical engineers are responsible for designing, developing, testing and supervising the manufacturing of electrical equipment. Manufacturers of electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, computers and electrical systems need skilled engineers with deep knowledge of how electrical systems work and interface with hardware and other systems. Because so many vehicles and structures rely on electrical systems, electrical engineers are in demand. The Graduate Certificate in Electrical Engineering prepares graduates for career advancement in specific specialities.
